Benchtop
Table Saws
Benchtop saws are intended to function while resting firmly on a tabletop
or other type of support. The blade is usually attached directly to a
universal type of motor. Benchtop saws have no pulleys or belts. They are
lightweight, and can be easily carried to the job site by one person. These
saws usually have parts that are made of plastic, aluminum, and steel, and are
intended to be light and compact.
Benchtop table saws cost less then other types of table saws and have fewer
capabilities then other types of table saws though they do have a sufficient
capacity and the accuracy for lots of jobs. The motor will not last as long or
run as quiet as an AC motor that has no brushes, but is more powerful relative
to its weight and size.
The top of a bench top table saw is narrower than the contractor and
cabinet table saws, so the width of the wood that can be ripped is narrower.
An additional limitation of the bench top table saw is due to the short rip
fence that makes it harder to do straight cuts when ripping. The distance from
the front edge of the tabletop to the blade is less, which makes cross cutting
stock using a miter harder to do. The miter or stock may not be entirely held
up by the table in front of the blade. Benchtop saws are smaller then other
kinds of table saws and have the smallest amount of mass this could result in
increased vibration while making a cut.
