Do not wait until the snow and cold or the rain is pouring down and then become overwhelmed. By doing a bit at a time before winter hits will make preparing for winter a lot easier.

The quality of your air should be a top priority. When preparing for winter be sure to check the quality of your air indoors to make sure you have no excessive dust or dirt, If you do take steps to immediately clean the air and therefore avoid creating a health hazard.

The next simple but very important to do is check your smoke detectors. If you do not have smoke detectors then get some. They can save a life. Make this a priority. Once you have purchased them then check them every month not just as you are preparing for winter.

Have a fireplace then be sure to have it checked out to insure safety. Over the coarse of spring and summer birds have been know to nest in the chimneys and also the creosote build up may be to much.

While preparing for winter purchase your wood and stack it while the whether is nice.

Be sure to cover your fans and air conditioners when preparing for winter.

On a windy or rainy day take a walk through your house to detect any drafts or leaks that will need fixing while preparing for winter.

Replace or add weather-stripping where needed.

Winterize basement windows.

Replace old windows with weather efficient windows.

Have your furnace serviced before the winter rush hits. Many companies run specials before the season.

Check for mold and algae within your home furnace. You'd be amazed at what can grow during the summer months. Although mold burns off it is distributed throughout your home.

Stock up on furnace filters. It is better to have some on hand so you can easily replace throughout the winter.

Use caulking to fix any leaky areas.

Preparing for winter ahead of time also means digging out your winter equipment and make sure it is working such as snow blowers or plows. You want these ready to go if an unexpected storm hits early. You will also need mitts, scarves, hats batteries in case you have a power failure and perhaps some candles and matches.

Be smart do it before the cold or wet weather hits you.
