Rock Gardens
- A rock garden is also referred to as
an alpine garden or a rockery. A rock garden is a kind of garden that uses
stones or rocks, together with plants that are native to the rocky or alpine
environment.
Rock garden plants are usually small, because many of the varieties are by
nature small. In rock gardens, you use small plants so that you do not to cover
up the rocks. They may be grown in containers, or directly in the ground. Plants
that you use in a rock garden will normally be the kinds that like less water
and well-drained soil.
The normal type of a rock garden is a stack of rocks, small and large,
esthetically placed, and with tiny spaces between, where the plants will sit and
grow. A number of rock gardens include bonsai.
A number of rock gardens are created to appear like actual outcrops of bedrock.
Plants are often used to hide the spaces between the stones. This type of rock
garden was fashionable in the Victorian area. This approach is at times used in
commercial landscaping, but can also be used in small private gardens.
