Landscape
Style - Oriental
gardens are filled with symbolism; Oriental gardens are an endeavor to create a
serene atmosphere, frequently through simple design. Oriental gardens are not
cluttered, and deliberately avoid using too many varieties of materials. The
amount of plant varieties is kept to a minimum. Cultivars are often placed in
groups. A courtyard might include an area of gravel with only one or a couple
rocks. The result is more striking when the amounts of rocks are kept to a
minimum.
In a western gardening, we think
of creating a landscape by adding plants. However, in Oriental gardening,
organic components such as water, rock, sand and timber or even gravel are
thought of as inseparable, and may often be used in a stylized or symbolic way.
The Oriental style of gardens has been sustained for centuries. As a result,
they have a tendency to be timeless and free of styles and fads.
The
feature here is a mock rock spring next to a formally formed, pom-pom juniper.
