Combining formal and informal
landscaping styles
- Combining formal
and informal landscaping styles give you more creative freedom to design, but
with more creative freedom, there is some risk involved. When you combine
styles, you are functioning beyond the rules that control the normal way a
garden is designed.
Using a creative method,
landscape designers get their ideas from all the garden traditions, combining
garden accessories, plants, and even outdoor artworks to create one of a kind
landscape. The knack is to combine the components with care so as not to over do
it with too much contrasts. Too much contrast can end up as a confusing mess, so
that no one feature stands out.
As an illustration, when creating
a formal garden style, the lines must be clean, and there has to be a
symmetrical balance between the items in the garden. With an informal garden,
the aim is to do the exact opposite, in other words you do not want symmetrical
balance and hard lines. In combining formal and informal landscaping styles in
your garden you are trying to avoid any one style from seemly becoming dominant.
