How To Repair A Squeaky Wood
Floor
Squeaky wood floors can be annoying, and if you are selling your home squeaky, wood
floors are a definite turn off to perspective buyers. Fortunately squeaky wood
floor are easy to repair, simply follow the instructions below.
If your squeaky wood floor is above a crawl space or your basement, make your repairs from beneath your
floor.
Begin by getting someone to walk across your squeaky
floor while listening from your crawl space or your basement. When you hear the
squeak, get the person above to tap on your floor, this will enable you to
locate the precise spot that the squeak is coming from. Then, get a thin wooden
shim and apply any type of quality wood glue to it. Using a hammer lightly
hammer the wooden shim into the gap between the subfloor and joist. Do not drive
it too far in because
you could end up raising the flooring. All you want to do
is to fill in the gap between the subfloor and joist to remove any “give” in
your floor. Make sure that you have adequate lighting, so that you can visually
confirm that you have filled in the gap.
For extra support, I recommend that you screw in a one and one-quarter inch deck screw at a slant,
make sure that the screw goes through your joist and wooden shim and into your
subfloor. If you have more then one squeaky spot repeat the above until you have fixed them all.
Tip:
To silence squeaky hardwood floors, try using talcum powder
as a dry lubricant. Sprinkle powder over the offending area, and between the
cracks.
