Replacing Rollers On Patio Doors

The cost to replace the rollers on the patio door usually runs about $100.00 plus parts. In this article we will tell you step by step how to do this yourself.

Depending on your strength you may need help removing the door from its frame as they can be heavy.

Patio doors have two sides. One side is stationary ( will not move ) and the other side is the sliding glass door. It is the sliding glass door  that we wish to remove in order to replace the rollers on your patio door.

Try removing your sliding unit if you can great move on to step 3 if you can not  due to a lip along the bottom  of the patio glass door frame ( it keeps moisture out of the house ) You will moist likely have to remove the stationary door first.

Before removing the stationary side try adjusting the slider door to see if this will help get it over the lip.

If you must remove your stationary side you will have to remove your screen door if you have one. Lift the end of the screen frame and use a screwdriver to help lift the corner out of the track.

Check to see if you have a metal piece running along the bottom of the stationary part to the bottom of the side jamb. This must be removed. Next remove the screws holding your stationary  slide in the frame.  Once you have removed the metal piece and all the screws try removing it from the frame. If  it will not come out try using a screw driver to help pry it out of the frame. Do not use a lot of force . Try having someone help you to lift the door out of the frame while you are pushing up on the screwdriver. Be careful not to damage the door track.

2. If you need more height clearance when removing the sliding door try adjusting the screws on the rollers by turning
them clockwise. This will move the wheels up giving you more space and height to remove the door. A helper will
come in useful here.

3.  In most cases the bottom of the sliding frame holds the rollers in place. you will need to remove the screws from both sides of this frame. You may find it will not come loose so try a rubber mallet or a piece of wood and tap on the frame until it comes off the sliding unite.

You should replace both rollers on your patio door while you have it out of the frame. If you pair a new roller with an old worn roller the new one will have to work twice as much and will wear out faster than if you had replaced both rollers.

4. Once you have replaced your rollers on the patio door Before inserting the sliding door back into its frame make sure the rollers are all the way up  in order to make it easier for reinstalling.
Once you have the sliding door back in its frame adjust the rollers until your frame slides back and forth nice and easy.
