Finishing Your Basement
Finishing your basement and transforming
it into additional living space is becoming very popular. It adds
additional space that will give you rooms for recreations, bars,
billiards, gyms, home theatres bedrooms, bathrooms. The cost of
finishing your basement is a lot lower than other cost of finishing
other areas of your home.
You should first decide on your budget and how you will finance
finishing
your basement. Will have to refinance your
mortgage or can it be done with a home equity loan.
It is critical to plan this out and know what you need in dollars to
achieve finishing your basement the way you
want so that you get the maximum usage out of it.
Next determine what you want to use the space for taking into account
the ceiling heights, existing pipes, furnaces and water systems.
Consider lighting. the key to a warm, cozy, inviting basement. Lighting
along with the kind of lighting is crucial to the feel of your finished
basement.. If you want natural lighting then find out if you can
add an additional window and will they be appropriate for that space.
If you are installing a bathroom in your
finished
basement then it is very important that you call in a plumber
before you start any work. You will probably have to remove some of the
cement floor which will be very messy and dusty.
Your plumber will be
able to tell you what you need or if it is a possibility to even have a
bathroom.
Find out if your furnace has the capacity to heat this extra space
you will have in your finished basement.
What about moisture or mildew. Your floors and walls should be sealed
and insulated to help reduce moisture in you new finished
basement. It is also wise to either install or purchase a humidifier.
After all your hard work and well spent money the last thing you want is
moisture or mildew.
